The Challenge

Searching for an Editing Language

BEYOND THE NOISE is part of KURDS OF IRAN, a documentary series exploring the culture and people of Iranian Kurdistan. While the series was originally shaped around a poetic and human-centered cinematic language, the project also required the inclusion of industrial themes and local manufacturing. This created a fundamental challenge during the editing process: how could industrial imagery — often associated with institutional or promotional language — exist within the emotional and poetic structure of the series without disrupting its identity?

This raised a central question during post-production:
how could the harsh visual and sonic world of industry be integrated into a documentary universe built on poetry, culture, and human presence?

Searching for an Editing Language

BEYOND THE NOISE is part of KURDS OF IRAN, a documentary series exploring the culture and people of Iranian Kurdistan. While the series was originally shaped around a poetic and human-centered cinematic language, the project also required the inclusion of industrial themes and local manufacturing.

How could industrial imagery — often associated with institutional or promotional language — exist within the emotional and poetic structure of the series without disrupting its identity?

Factories, especially textile factories, naturally contain elements that resist poetic interpretation: overwhelming mechanical noise, repetitive movement, rigid structures, and an atmosphere dominated by production and machinery.

Instead of removing these industrial elements or presenting them through a conventional promotional approach, the editing process searched for a cinematic language capable of transforming their emotional meaning.

 

The Musical Reinterpretation of Industrial Space

The solution to this challenge emerged through the relationship between music and montage.

Rather than presenting the factory as a purely functional or industrial environment, the editing process attempted to reinterpret the space through rhythm, sound, and cultural association.

For the factory sequences, I used music associated with traditional Iranian ritualistic and heroic culture.

Repetition became rhythm.
Industrial motion became choreography.
Mechanical sound became part of a larger musical structure.

When placed alongside the heavy rhythmic movement of the textile machines, the machinery began to acquire a different emotional identity.

Warp and Weft as Cultural Metaphor

Early in the film, an interviewee explains how fabric is created through the interconnection of warp and weft.

The film treats music, labor, memory, movement, and people as interconnected elements woven into a collective cultural identity.

Music was not used simply to support the image emotionally, but to redefine the image itself.

Through music and montage, industrial noise was transformed into cultural resonance.
